The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is the primary data collection
program for the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
The purpose of IPEDS is to report statistics on the condition of higher education in the United
States. IPEDS conducts a series of surveys to collect data on a variety of topics such as
student enrollment and graduation, faculty and staff numbers and salaries, and overall university
expenditures.

One survey conducted by IPEDS is the annual "Full-time Instructional Faculty Salary Survey".
As part of this survey, The University of Memphis reports an overall average salary for
full-time instructional faculty and average salaries for these faculty broken down by academic
rank.

In reporting average faculty salaries to IPEDS, the University of Memphis uses the following
criteria:

     1) To be included in the survey, the employee must be considered as either "Faculty" or
"Administrator" according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) codes
        for that employee's position.

     2) The employee must be classified as full-time, permanent.

     3) The employee must spend greater than 50% of his or her time in teaching or research.

     4) The employee must be active or on paid leave such as sabbatical. Employees on leave
        without pay are not considered.

     5) The employee salary reported to IPEDS is that given on the University's official October
        budget.

     6) For an employee with a 9-month (academic year) appointment, the salary is reported directly.
For an employee with a 12-month (fiscal year) appointment, the salary is first prorated
to a 9-month salary using the formula, prorated salary = actual annual salary * 9/11 .
